Origin Story: Pedro Gabarra

Brazil 'Arara' Microlot

Pedro Gabarra's farming operations are situated in Minas Gerais, the heart of Brazilian coffee, producing over 20 different varietals of green coffee. Fazenda Pinhal, one of Pedro's farms, sits at an altitude of 900 - 1200 metres above sea level, and explores 14 different processing methods to ensure he meets consumer demands and needs. On top of his quality focus, Pedro is always looking to make a positive impact On the environment, as well as the community of workers he employs.

Recently becoming a carbon negative certified producer, his Pinhal Farm was also named Brazil's most sustainable farm in 2019. Whilst only legally required to preserve 20% of the land by Brazilian legislation, Pedro’s Pinhal and Santo Antonio farms preserve in excess of 40% of their land.

One of Pedro's key programs is called the 'Wings Project'. In 2016, Pedro partnered with Area de Soltura de Animals Silvestres (Wild Animals Release Area), allowing threatened species to be rehabilitated and released in the protected forest areas on his farm. Some of the wildlife Pedro's team fosters are birds, opossums, porcupines, and even tortoises and snakes. Pedro and his team continue to run the Wings Project, always looking to expand their impact on reducing environmental issues with their facilities.

Pedro has also implemented a range of programs and benefits for his team and community. He continues to offer a payment towards renting a court to encourage sporting activities for his employees and their families.

When it comes to coffee, Pedro holds a range of certifications. Rainforest Certified, Carbon Negative, BSCA and AAA Espresso are just a few of the certifications his farms hold. It is a true testament to his ability to go above and beyond to produce fantastic quality coffee under these strict certification guidelines. Pedro's coffee has received praise and recognition, with three first place finishes and 3 more top 3 finishes in coffee certification competitions. With a strong reputation in the coffee industry it is not surprising to learn that Pedro's family has 150 years of experience over six generations.

Origin Story: Gathaithi Farmers' Cooperative Society

Kenya Gathaithi AA

The Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society unites 1,656 active farmers in the renowned coffee-growing region of Nyeri County, Kenya. Located in Gaki, between the majestic Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare ranges, the cooperative benefits from an ideal environment that supports coffee cultivation, with nutrient-rich red volcanic soil and cool temperatures ranging from 16 to 26°C.

Upon harvest, cherries are delivered to the Gathaithi Coffee Factory, where only the finest cherries are selected. After pulping, the coffee undergoes an overnight fermentation process to develop its complex flavors. The beans are then washed, soaked, and dried on raised tables for 7-15 days, depending on climate conditions. Continuous hand-turning and sorting ensure that every lot meets the cooperative’s high standards.

Origin Story: Coffeea Liberica

Discover the amazing and rare variety that is Liberica.

In 2014, the team at My Liberica invested in upgrades to their processing facilities which resulted in higher quality coffee.

The next significant step was partnership with Project Origin in 2020. Sasa and the team  brought years of hands on experience, and knowledge of specific innovative coffee production techniques such as carbonic maceration.

It is no surprise that Australian barista Hugh Kelly benefitted from this partnership to place third at the 2021 World Barista Championships using Liberica.

Liberica had arrived, and for everyone working at My Liberica, this was the ultimate reward and vindication of a decision made over a decade earlier to take a risk on a coffee that was far from popular at the time.

When you purchase Liberica, some of that money is being reinvested directly to the team at My Liberica so they can continue to improve and refine what they already have achieved.
